![]() ![]() So, what's new in Grim Fandango Remastered? Well, you can't miss the spruced up visuals since Manny and his friends now sport smooth complexions, free of the pixellated edges of before. We're not going to make any bones about it, Grim Fandango was one of the greatest adventure games to come out of LucasArts' doors, and the Remastered version was never going to change that.ĭevising puzzles that truly deliver is a skill in itself, but it's the way Grim Fandango weaves them into its narrative in an unobtrusive and organic way that makes the game a classic of its genre. The conundrums Manny must face are traditional in nature, nothing adventure veterans haven't tackled a dozen times before, yet they're varied enough in style and difficulty to keep the brains of first-timers working overtime throughout. Grim Fandango's ability to tell an engaging story and weave a compelling mystery hasn't faded over time, but this was only ever half the battle since it would have counted for little without challenging puzzles to drive the experience. It's a shade darker than the adventures LucasArts made its name with in the early 1990s, with very few jokes in the traditional sense, instead embracing situational humour and subtly drawing laughs from its inter-character moments. We can think of few titles more deserving of resurrection than this, and Grim Fandango Remastered is the same exceptional game LucasArts released back in 1998, with welcome improvements and fan-pleasing bonus features tossed in for good measure.Īnd this is precisely why Grim Fandango Remastered is worthy of your time. The secret to the game's success was no different to any other vintage LucasArts adventure, the combination of engaging storytelling and challenging puzzles making these titles the unforgettable experiences that shaped PC gaming during the 1990s. Grim Fandango is one of the few success stories of its era in this regard as it made effective use of the third dimension - but this was never its greatest accomplishment. The original game landed at the tail end of the point-and-click movement, when the adventure genre was taking its first steps into 3D, a dimension it didn't lend itself particularly well to. ![]()
